Hello,

I'm a Canadian Orton Gillingham Tutor Associate with 11 years experience. I've create and produce O.G. based games that have been very successful here in Canada. I thought I'd send out my website address to other organizations who might be interested in adding fresh material to their lesson plans.

I'm fascinated that they don't regularly teach what we call "sounding it out" (breaking down into syllables) in schools - over here it seems to be one of the staples of teaching to read. I'm dyslexic too, and we are due to have a child in Dec, so I'm really interested in your blog.

Thanks Christine. I just want to say to your readers that I don't want to sound like a big old sob story. I'm just someone dealing with a lot of adversity right now. Sometimes that's the way life rolls however it would be great to get a break...LOL. I know that eventually something has to give.

I appreciate that you thought enough of me to write a post about my difficult, twisted situation. You rock.

Yvonne-
welcome to my blog! You have really been dealing with these issues for a long time. I think when it is your first child, who is struggling (not neccessarily your oldest), you don't know how to deal with it. You think that the school would test them and help you out. I found out the hard way, that this doesn't happen. That is why we went for outside testing. The outside testing diagnosed Amy with the mod to severe dyslexia. I still feel that she could have dysgraphia, too, but, over the past year, her handwriting has improved. I am happy to hear that your oldest son is doing better in school and wish you good luck with your younger son. It isn't fun to battle the school, in which we entrust the education of our children, and they turn around, and tell you, your child doesn't qualify for our special ed services. It is like telling you, go let your child fail, and we don't care about it. It can be very disappointing.

I have dealt with both of my children in the public school system. One of my children has dyslexia, the other dysgraphia, (which also is a form of dyslexia). I really feed up with the school system tim and time again I am told that my childrens disablitity is not sever enough to recieve any assist from the school. My oldest struggled through elementry his handwritting was hard to read and unusally had no spacing betwen words. (typical of dysgraphia) it effect his grades greatly and ever 9 weeks I was calld for the meeting the one where they say we need to work with your son because he is not going to pass. So they would tell m about working on his handwritting question me about his home life and when they were done easing there burden and but on the quilt on me they would leave me in the dust strip bear feeling like the worst mother on arth question everything I have done, and having no answers. I went through this over and over again with both my children. Both would always pass the fcat with 4and 5 and then the school will back off and start up again after first grades would come. My oldest entered middle school and his 5th grade teach push for them to retest him for gifted he had an IQ of 130. He was put in gift class in middile school and was allowed to use school computer for most class assignments. He is now an honor roll student, reads at a 12 grade level. Iam still fighting for my youngst son and have sought the help of my oldest 5th grade teacher. We will get him their. I would like to tell you my son fcat scores this year was a 4 reading a five in math which are high to above average scores and a one in writttine the lowest score possible. So why doesn't cause any help from the school I don't know. But I have learned that you don't count on the school you do the battling because only then do you get the help they need. MY son 5th grade teach will always be a mentor to me she showed that there are a few teachers willing to fiht for these kids. I am presently working on a teachers degeee in elementry education for childrn with learning disablities. I will do my best to not let what happen to my children happen to other child.

Do you have any pets she could read to? Our ESY is a joke; with the holidays and "I" days it worked out to only 4 weeks. Hope the one on one boosts her confidence!

Heather-You are off to a good start, since you are already receiving services through the school district. It took us 4 years for the CST to finally say that Amy was delayed enough for them to evaluate her. My 3 1/2 year old son, is currently in the preschool program, for *gasp* oral motor dyspraxia. So, I am in both places! I feel that at least we are already being serviced for the little one, and that his speech and language delay can be a red flag for dyslexia, but, not always neccessarily the case, and we are noticing that he is picking up on letters on their own, and in words now, something which Amy couldn't do.
Is your 4 yo oral motor dyspraxic, or gross/fine motor dyspraxic???
Welcome to my blog, I did start it, to help out other parents, of school aged children, with any learning disorders, so, please feel free to write and ask me questions!
